Masks and the First Amendment
Many anti-maskers have fought for their right to choose to not wear a mask, even though it is required by law, because they believe it violates their first amendment rights.
Courts have been fighting these cases since masks have become mandatory. A court in Florida ruled that masks mandates are "constitutional" because "the requirement to wear such a covering has a clear rational basis based on the protection of public health".
I believe that mask mandates are necessary in these times because the masks do not protect yourself from others, but rather they protect others from you. This is why mask mandates are crucial. If the masks were protecting you from others, then I would not care about a mask mandate. My rule of thumb is "if people want to be stupid, let them be stupid". However, because of how the masks work, this rule cannot be applied.

Extremists point to the mask as a first step toward "government control". These extreme claims are absolutely ridiculous. Wearing a mask does not equate to the government controlling you.
I believe most people do not enjoy wearing the mask, but most people also understand that they would rather be able to go back to a time where a mask is not needed sooner rather than later.
As of now, masks mandates are constitutional. However, maybe we will see a radical ruling somewhere that could change that. Until now, keep wearing the mask and social distancing.
